1959年底，這顆神秘的鏡頭被發表。她由7枚5群構成，有些人懷疑這鏡頭並不是由Nikon本身所生產的。這顆鏡頭的生命週期，相對來說是比較短的。不到2年的時間她就退出了市場。總生產量僅僅39000支。雖然她有變更，但變更的只是對焦尺塗裝：有的標示是m，有的是ft，有的是兩者都標示。在1962年3月，她的姊妹鏡問市了，是一款金屬鏡筒的版本，鏡筒上有明顯標示"Patent Pending"。

[Nikon Nikkor-S (C) Auto 1:1.4 f= 50mm standard lens]
如前所述，這支鏡頭在1962年3月登場。這支鏡頭由7枚6群構成，在量產過程中光學結構有修改過幾次。實際上，這支鏡頭一直都在生產，即使跨入了AF-D Nikkor時代，改版後仍然繼續生產著。光學結構上及外觀上的變動分別在1972年、1974年、1976年、1981年、1984年以及1986年變更為AF版本。其中AF版本也至少修正過三次。這是支相當受寵的鏡頭-即使是在數位時代-仍然是一支相當好的標準鏡頭。發表後一共生產超過400萬支。
